Pickup area is not a detail, it is the product

Corralejo to Morro Jable is 111 road kilometres, roughly an hour and three quarters each way. No operator drives an empty van the length of the island to collect you, so every tour here is built around one half of it.

That is why the best-reviewed of them is called “Wild North … From the South”. It exists because the classic northern round trips start in Corralejo and never come near Costa Calma. Book the wrong half and you are either refused at checkout or, worse, you spend the first and last ninety minutes of a seven-hour day watching the FV-2 go past.

So check the pickup list before the itinerary. Then check whether lunch is in the price, because that is the other number that moves.

Seven hours from the south, eight from the north

The southern tour runs a van with a maximum of eight passengers and guides in German, English and Polish. Its stops are timed and published: twenty minutes at the dunes of Corralejo, half an hour at the Calderón Hondo crater with a short walk, a full hour loose in Corralejo itself, twenty minutes at Playa El Mejillón, twenty at El Cotillo, and Mount Tindaya from the road. Hotel pickup and the walk are included; food and drinks are not. The booking page lists children under 6, babies, wheelchair users and people over 95 as unsuitable.

The northern Panoramic Tour is the better deal on paper and the longer day in practice: eight hours for €65 in an air-conditioned minivan, again a maximum of eight, with lunch and drinks included. It goes the other way across the island, taking in the dunes, Sotavento, a lunch stop at Ajuy with an optional half-hour walk to the caves, Betancuria and the Peñita canyon. The booking page lists wheelchair users as unsuitable.

Twelve euros less and a meal thrown in, for a longer day. The reason it does not simply win is the one above: if you are sleeping in Jandía, it does not collect you.

When a private minibus is the cheap option

The Island Tour by Minibus is priced for the vehicle, not the seat: €350 for a group of up to seven, six hours, 4.7 stars from 839 reviews. Split seven ways that is €50 a head, which undercuts every per-person tour on this page. Split three ways it is €117 each, which is the dearest thing here by a distance.

That one line of arithmetic is the whole decision, and it is the reason this tour is worth a second look for a family of five or six who would otherwise buy five or six seats elsewhere. The listing also promises free time for tapas in a traditional setting rather than a fixed lunch.

For what a private vehicle gets you that a tour cannot, and for the route across the mountain spine to Betancuria and Ajuy, see the one drive on Fuerteventura that is worth it.

Five hours, €35, and no pretence of seeing the island

The cruise passenger tour is the only one here under €50. Five hours around the northern towns, beaches and a swim or a walk on the shore, 4.6 stars from 355 reviews.

It is honest about its own limits in a way the others are not: it does not claim to show you Fuerteventura, it claims to use the time your ship gives you. If you are ashore for a day, or if a full-day tour is more than your children will sit through, this is the right size of outing — and half a day instead of a whole one explains why that maths works out better than it looks.

What eight passengers change, and what they do not

Every tour on this page runs in a van or minibus rather than a coach, and two of them cap the group at eight. That buys you three real things: the vehicle can use roads a coach cannot, nobody waits for forty people to reboard, and you can ask a question and get an answer.

What it does not buy is more time at each stop. Twenty minutes at the dunes is twenty minutes whether there are eight of you or fifty. If you want to stand somewhere until you are finished looking at it, no guided tour of any size will do that, and you want a car.

It also does not buy you a different island. All four tours visit broadly the same places, because the island has a small number of spectacular ones; what differs is the order, the direction and the lunch. The places themselves are described in what to see in Fuerteventura.

When to book none of them

When you have already seen the north under your own steam. Two of these four are northern loops, and the southern tour is one as well — it simply drives you up there first.

When somebody in the party cannot sit for seven hours with twenty-minute breaks. That is the honest shape of these days, and no operator describes it that way.

When the forecast says calima. A panoramic tour in an island-wide dust haze is a long drive to look at milk.

When you are two people and tempted by the private minibus. At €175 each it is poor value; at €50 each with seven of you it is the best buy on the page.

Otherwise, pick by your bed, not by the itinerary: from the south, the seven-hour tour at €77; from the north, the eight-hour one at €65 with lunch included.
