If you can walk eight kilometres and want something you cannot do anywhere else, book the Guided Trekking Tour with Island Goats: €58, 4.9 stars from 186 reviews, hotel pickup in the south included. If you would rather stand still with the animals, the Artisan Goat’s Cheese Making at a Local Farm takes 2.5 hours at €75 and sends you home with your own cheese. And for an adult hour with a glass in your hand, the tour and tasting at Conatvs Winery costs €35.

Why the island has goats and cheese at all

The cheese is Majorero, the island’s own, made from the milk of the Majorera goat, and it carries a protected designation of origin. You will see goats on the roadside and on the hills almost everywhere you drive. The three outings are not the same kind of day, and it is worth being clear about what you are buying: one is a hike, one is a workshop, one is a tasting.

The goat trek: eight kilometres with five goats

The trek runs near the mountain El Cardón in the south and, according to the listing, covers about eight kilometres on mostly rough ground at medium difficulty. You meet five island goats, feed them corn, watch them run free and take turns walking them on a leash. The walk finishes with a local snack: goat’s cheese and tomatoes, as the page puts it.

It is the longest of the three. The listing gives 3.5 to 5 hours, and the pickup covers Jandía, Esquinzo, Tarajalejo, Costa Calma and La Lajita, with transfer included for the south of the island only. From the north it is a drive.

The operator’s exclusion list is long and worth reading before you click: children under 9, pregnant women, people with mobility impairments, wheelchair users, people with heart or respiratory problems, visually or hearing-impaired people, people over 80 and people with a low level of fitness. Bring closed shoes, a hat, sunscreen and water; the page also asks for clothes that can get dirty.

The cheese workshop: sitting down, with your hands in the milk

The workshop takes 2.5 hours on a traditional farm, in a group of no more than ten. You learn manual and machine milking, make your own fresh cheese, break for a Canarian breakfast in the garden (a fresh cheese sandwich, a cheese board with mojos and homemade jams, one drink of your choice) and, once the cheese has rested in the press, vacuum-pack and label it to take home.

Reviewers on the page mention feeding the baby goats, which is the reason this one suits children. The listing is available in English and Spanish and marks the activity as wheelchair accessible; that is the operator’s statement, so ask about the access to the production room if it matters to you. No transfer appears in the list of inclusions, so plan how you get to the farm.

At €75 it is the most expensive of the three, and it is the only one where you leave with something. The booking page states no minimum age, so a family with small children should ask first.

The winery tour: an hour among the vines

Bodega Conatvs sits in volcanic landscape, and the tour starts at the winery itself. For about an hour a guide takes you between the vines, into the cellar where the grapes become wine and finally into the tasting room, where the wines come with bread, olive oil, olives and Majorero cheese. The guide speaks English.

The listing says it is meant for adults and teenagers aged 16 and over, and that teenagers get the same food with water and juice instead of wine. Nothing is said about younger children, and an hour of cellar talk is not an outing for them anyway.

It is the cheapest and shortest of the three, which is its strength: it fits into any day without turning it into a farm day.

Which one with which party

With children aged six to eleven, the cheese workshop, once you have asked about the minimum age. The trek excludes the under-nines and demands real walking, while the workshop is mostly standing and doing. The guide to the island with school-age kids sets out what that age range lasts through.

With teenagers, the trek or the winery, depending on whether they would rather walk or taste. From sixteen they can join the winery on their own terms.

As a couple without a car in the south, the trek, because pickup is included there and nothing else on this page is.

With limited mobility, the cheese workshop is the one whose listing states wheelchair access. The island with limited mobility explains how to check such claims before you book.

For a day with more animals and a ticket that covers the whole afternoon, there is Oasis Wildlife or the water park.

When to book none of them

When the group wants a full day on the water. None of these is a day trip; the longest ends within five hours.

When you were hoping to see goats without paying. They are on the roadside across the island, and a stop costs nothing; the tickets buy the guide, the feeding and the walk.

When anyone in the party is on the trek’s not-suitable list and wants the animals anyway. The workshop is the answer for them.

Otherwise: walkers, the trek at €58. Everyone else, the cheese workshop at €75.
