Oasis Wildlife, Acua Water Park or the three museums: which park day works with your kids

For most families the answer is the Oasis Wildlife entry ticket at €41.50: open every day of the year, works at any age, and nothing in it depends on how tall your child is. If your children are taller than 120 centimetres and you are travelling between late March and early November, the Acua Water Park ticket at €30 buys a better day for less money. And on the windy afternoon when nothing else works, the combined ticket for the salt, cheese and windmill museums costs €12.50 and stays valid for a year.

The question that decides it is not price, it is the calendar

Acua Water Park publishes its season openly, and it is shorter than most people assume. The park’s own opening-hours page gives daily opening from 27 March to 12 April, then 10:30 to 17:30 with Wednesdays and Thursdays closed until 31 May, daily from 10:00 to 18:00 through June, July and August, Wednesdays and Thursdays closed again from 1 September to 18 October, and daily to 8 November. After that it shuts until the following spring.

So for a Christmas or February holiday there is no water park on this island, and the decision is made for you. Oasis Wildlife in La Lajita is open every day of the year from 9 am to 6 pm, as stated on its own site, with the usual note that times can change.

The second thing the park states plainly: the pools are not heated. In March and early November, on an island where the trade wind rarely takes a day off, that is not a detail.

120 centimetres is the line that runs through Acua

The park publishes a height chart, and it splits the place in two. Below 120 centimetres a child has the Kids Area, the Lagoon Splash, the Mini Splash Race and the Mini Kamikazes — real slides, scaled down, with their own upper limit of 1.30 metres so that bigger children stay off them.

Everything that makes teenagers want to come back is on the other side of that line: the Fast River over its hundred-metre course, the Zig-Zags, the Dark Cave, the Castle Jump and the two Kamikazes all need 120 centimetres, and several of them carry a weight limit of 120 kilos.

A four-year-old therefore has a good small pool complex and nothing else, for the same €30 that buys an older child the run of the whole park. That is the single most useful thing to know before you buy, and no listing says it.

The park’s published rules fill in the rest: under-twelves need an adult with them, teenagers between twelve and sixteen have to hand in a responsibility form signed by a guardian at the ticket office, floats, lockers, sunbeds and parasols are limited in number, outside food and drink stay outside, the attractions shut half an hour before the park does, and there is no refund if the weather turns. Pregnant women and people with heart problems are excluded from the attractions.

Oasis Wildlife is the one that works at every age

A million square metres, more than 3,000 animals from around 250 species, a botanical garden and a cactus garden. The reason it suits families is duller than the animals: you can stop whenever you want. No return boat, no group to hold up, no height chart.

It is also an all-day proposition rather than an afternoon. Sessions with sea lions, birds and other animals run to fixed times spread across the day, so you build the visit around them. Arrive at three and you have paid full price for the leftovers.

Two things cost extra and both catch people out: the camel ride and the lemur experience are not in the ticket, and the park wants the camel ride reserved directly with it at least a day ahead. Children pay a reduced rate between four and eleven, under-fours go free and the adult rate starts at twelve; the current amounts are on the booking page. We have gone through the ticket in detail in Oasis Wildlife Fuerteventura.

And the part no review score settles: it is a zoo. If keeping animals this way is not something you want to pay for, this ticket is not for you, and that is a reason, not a reservation.

€12.50 buys three small museums, not one afternoon

The combined ticket covers the Salt Museum at Salinas del Carmen, the Museo del Queso Majorero and the windmill interpretation centre. It is valid for 365 days and lets you into each site once, which means you can spread it across three separate afternoons instead of forcing it into one.

That flexibility is the point, because the three are not next to each other and the ticket includes no transport. The windmill centre is closed on Mondays and Sundays, and the windmills themselves are not accessible to visitors with reduced mobility, which the operator states rather than leaving you to find out.

For a six- to eleven-year-old the salt pans and the cheese dairy are genuinely good: things to touch, a short visit, and an answer to where the Majorero cheese on every menu comes from. For a toddler it is a building with glass cases.

Where you are staying decides more than you think

Acua is in Corralejo, in the north. Oasis is in La Lajita, on the coast road in the south between Tarajalejo and Costa Calma. From one to the other is most of the island, and Corralejo to Morro Jable is 111 road kilometres.

From a southern resort, Oasis is a short hop and Acua is a day eaten by driving. From Corralejo it is the other way round. Oasis names public bus lines and runs its own resort buses, with conditions that differ by stop, and its car park is free; the museums expect you to arrive under your own steam. If a car is on the table for the week anyway, it is worth working out properly in do you need a hire car in Fuerteventura, and you can compare hire cars for the island while you do it. Without one, start with Fuerteventura without a car.

Nothing here about sun protection or heat belongs in a travel article. Ask a pharmacist, and for a small child a doctor.

When to buy none of the three

When the sea is behaving and your children are old enough for it. A park is the answer to a bad wind day; a boat trip is the answer to a good one, and the island has 181 offers to pick from.

When you are in the north in winter and were counting on the water park. It will be shut.

When your child is well under 120 centimetres and the water park is the plan. Half of it will be closed to them and the admission is the same.

When the museum ticket is meant to fill a whole day. It is three short visits with drives in between, not an outing.

Otherwise, with mixed ages or a toddler in the party, buy the Oasis ticket and give it the whole day. It is the one that works in any month and at any height.
