What a week in Fuerteventura with kids costs: the parts you can actually add up

A week in Fuerteventura for two adults and two children comes down to three big items. Two of them nobody can quote you in advance, and that includes me.

The airfare depends on your departure airport, on the calendar week and on when you book. Between a quiet November week and the Easter holidays there is no surcharge, there is a multiple. Accommodation behaves the same way. Anyone who hands you a range for those two has made it up.

What can be worked out to the last decimal is the excursion side. There are 190 bookable offers for this island, the cheapest costs €12.50, the middle price sits at €69, and 55,597 reviews stand behind them. Those numbers turn into a family week that holds up.

The “from” price misleads, the median doesn’t

Every category carries two prices: the one it is advertised with, and the one the middle offer costs. How far apart they sit varies wildly by category – and that is where most people get their sums wrong.

Surf lessons start at €50, the median is €54.15: €4.15 of spread across 19 offers. Here you can plan with the entry price and be right. Windsurfing and kitesurfing starts at €63.75, with a median of €130, roughly double. For four people that is the difference between €255 and €520.

The same pattern runs through the whole list. Buggy and quad: 17 offers, from €60, median €99. Isla de Lobos: 25 offers, from €16, median €62. Snorkelling and diving: 29 offers, from €27, median €62. Catamaran: 17 offers, from €50, median €75. Whales and dolphins: 10 offers, from €40, median €75. And the big catch-all block of things to do with 83 offers: from €12.50, median €75, a factor of six.

The rule that follows is unspectacular and still saves the most money. Where the two values sit close together, budget with the entry price. Where they sit far apart, the entry price is a single offer that is shorter, smaller or out of season. Then budget with the median.

Four people means four tickets

Practically every one of these offers is priced “per person”. That sounds obvious, but it shifts the order of magnitude: €79 becomes €316. The eight items families reach for most often, with the price for four alongside:

Child prices: two documented cases, otherwise check

The prices above are adult prices per person. Whether a child pays less is settled at the operator’s booking step, and that is the only place it is binding.

Two cases can be documented. Naviera Nortour, the line that runs from Corralejo to Lobos, lists €17 for adults on its own site, €11 for children aged 4 to 11 and free travel under 4. For two adults and two children in that bracket that comes to €56 instead of €68. The same page charges €2 per person for applying for the Lobos permit on your behalf; the permit is free, the paperwork is not. And Oasis Wildlife states in its FAQ that children pay from the age of four – for a toddler the €41.50 falls away entirely.

For everything else: check rather than assume.

Three weekly budgets for four people

Seven days, excursions only, every figure from the list above.

Frugal, three outings: €410. Lobos by speedboat €64, Calderón Hondo volcano tour €180, Oasis Wildlife €166. The rest of the week belongs to the beach, the dunes and wandering round town, and costs nothing.

Middling, five outings: €870. Lobos ferry €68, dolphin watching €196, Oasis Wildlife €166, volcano tour €180, jeep safari to Cofete €260. That fills roughly every second day.

For scale: at a median of €69, an average excursion day for four costs €276, and seven of them would be €1,932. The upper week stays below that because two of its seven items sit well under the median: the crossing to Lobos and the wildlife park ticket. Swap those two for two more boat trips at the €75 median and the bill reads €1,852. That is where the budget is decided, not over whether you do one excursion more.

Where the rest of the money goes

Hire car. Corralejo and Morro Jable sit some 111 road kilometres from each other, well over an hour and a half of driving in each direction. Without a car a fair share of the list is hard to reach, because the boats in the north and the south leave from different harbours. I am not quoting a daily rate: it depends on season, company, vehicle class and how much excess you leave in place. Put the item in your budget with a real quote, not with a number from an article.

Bus. The island network is run by Tiadhe, and no direct connection between Corralejo and Morro Jable exists: you take line 06 to Puerto del Rosario and change there onto line 01 or the faster line 10. There is even a line to Cofete, the 111 from Morro Jable, though it runs so rarely that the return time dictates the day.

Entry fees. The Lobos permit costs nothing, runs in the visitor’s name and is requested at lobospass.com; there are two slots, 10am to 2pm and 2pm to 6pm, with 200 places each. Some operators apply for it on your behalf, others don’t, and the requirements can change. Where saving works and where it doesn’t

The most-booked excursion isn’t automatically the one you should book. The two-hour dolphin trip from Morro Jable holds the longest review list on the island at 5,142 and sits at 4.2 stars while doing so, among the weakest scores in the twenty most sought-after offers. €196 for four people, and the animals are promised nowhere. If what you want is the time on the water rather than the sighting, €300 buys four hours on the glass-bottom boat with lunch.

Short is nearly always cheap here. €16 for the crossing to Lobos against €79 for four hours of catamaran means €64 against €316 for the family. Why the short trips are the better deal with small children on top of that is set out in Fuerteventura with a toddler.

One place where price comparison barely helps: windsurfing and kitesurfing. Thirteen offers share a total of 77 reviews, the thinnest evidence in the whole list; the 25 Lobos offers carry 11,547. Here you are buying largely blind, and the gap between €63.75 and €130 tells you nothing about which is the better one.

Timing your booking, on the other hand, costs nothing at all. With almost every tour, cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the start.
