Villa Winter stands above remote Cofete Beach on the Jandía Peninsula. For decades, stories have linked the house to German submarines, secret tunnels, an airstrip and Nazis. Publicly accessible sources do not provide solid evidence for those spectacular claims.

Gustav Winter was a German engineer who influenced economic development in southern Fuerteventura. Pájara’s municipal information describes him as a former owner of the Jandía Peninsula and says the Winter family built the house in the 1940s. More precise dates and many biographical details vary between accounts. Without an accessible primary record, they should not be presented as settled fact.
The municipality still treats the family’s role and the stories surrounding the house as subjects of historical discussion. That is the honest distinction: the building is real and Winter’s connection with Jandía is documented, while the familiar espionage and submarine stories remain unproven.
Cofete is inside Jandía Natural Park
Cofete lies in Jandía Natural Park, not a “Cofete National Park”. The official management plan gives the park an area of 14,318.5 hectares. Access is by an unpaved track, whose condition can change with weather and maintenance.
There is no lifeguard service on the beach. The official tourism page flags strong surf and advises caution when bathing. Treat Cofete primarily as a landscape and viewpoint destination.
