Bike rental instead of a guided tour: €15 a day, and what it costs you

Updated September 16, 2026 · 6 min read

Mountain bike leaning against a volcanic rock wall on a track in northern Fuerteventura

The cheapest way onto two wheels on this island is not a tour. Tour 417003, a bike hire arrangement in Corralejo, is listed in our inventory dated 16 September 2026 at €15 with a one-day duration. It carries 4.4 stars from 100 reviews — a larger sample than most guided cycling options here have. The operator offers either an electric bike or a mountain bike and describes the ride as self-guided, naming Corralejo Natural Park and Calderón Hondo as the obvious targets.

Against that, the guided e-bike tour from Costa Calma is €55 for three hours. The gap is not a discount. It is a different product, and the honest way to decide is to look at what the €40 was buying.

What the guide was for

A guided ride includes someone who knows which track is rideable this week, which junction is unsigned, and where the wind turns. It includes a bike that has been checked that morning and a plan for what happens if something breaks. On a rental, all three become yours.

That is not an argument against renting. It is an argument for asking three questions at the counter. What is included beyond the bike — helmet, lock, repair kit, pump? What number do you call if you get a puncture eight kilometres out, and does anyone come? And what is the deposit, in what form, and when does it come back?

The deposit question is the one that surprises people. Ask whether it is taken as a card pre-authorisation or in cash, what damage it covers, and what the excess is if the bike is stolen while locked. A rental agreement that does not answer this in writing is a rental agreement worth walking away from.

Corralejo and Calderón Hondo are the right targets, with a caveat

The rental listing names the natural park and Calderón Hondo, and both are within reach of Corralejo on a bike. The caveat is that the dunes are a protected area, declared by Royal Decree 3058/1982 and reclassified as a parque natural in 1994, with a management plan approved in 2006. Access on foot is along the delimited paths, and vehicles belong in the designated parking and access areas rather than on the sand.

What that means in practice for a bicycle is that you follow the signage on site rather than a line you drew on a map at the hotel. Do not assume a track visible on satellite imagery is open to you. Our guide to the dunes of Corralejo goes through the park in more detail; read it before you plan a route through it rather than around it.

Calderón Hondo is a different matter — a volcanic cone with a walking route up it. A bike gets you to the trailhead, not up the cone. Lock it where the walkers park and treat the climb as a walk, which is what it is.

Wind decides your route, not gradient

Fuerteventura is long, low and open. The trade wind does more to your riding day than any hill on the island, and the classic beginner’s mistake is a pleasant outbound leg with the wind behind you followed by a return that takes twice as long. Plan the outbound leg into the wind. It feels wrong and it is right.

The same logic explains why the island’s cycling scene concentrates in the north around Corralejo, Lajares and El Cotillo, where the distances between villages are short enough to bail out of. Our guide to the best time to visit sets out the month-by-month wind picture; it was written for boat trips and beaches, and it applies unchanged to a bicycle.

Water is the other planning constraint. There is very little shade on this island and long stretches with nothing to buy. Carry more than you think you need, and for anything about heat, sun exposure or how much a particular person should attempt, ask a pharmacist or your doctor rather than a website.

Two rentals that come with instruction attached

If riding alone is the part that worries you, two listings sit between a bare rental and a full guided tour.

El Cotillo surf lessons, bike tours and rentals, tour 508629, is listed at €60 for three hours with 4.1 stars from six reviews. Six reviews is a very small sample and should be read as such. The listing bundles surfing and cycling from the same base, which is useful if you are in the north for a week and want both from one operator. If surfing is the main reason, our north-versus-south comparison is the better starting point.

The road bike tour from El Cotillo, tour 753668, is €80 for four hours as a private tour, 5 stars from three reviews, led by a triathlon coach and open to all levels. That is a road bike on tarmac, not a mountain bike on tracks, and it is the only listing in our inventory aimed at someone who already rides at home and wants the island’s roads with local knowledge attached.

When renting is the wrong call

Rent if you are staying a week, want to ride on more than one day, and are comfortable fixing a chain or accepting that you might have to walk. At €15 a day the arithmetic beats a guided tour almost immediately.

Do not rent if it is a single afternoon and you have never ridden here, if you want the route decided for you, or if you are travelling with children who need a bike that actually fits. Child-sized equipment is not something our inventory records, and operators set their own conditions on age and height — that answer belongs on the booking page, not in an article. Families weighing an active afternoon against a calmer one will find the trade-offs in half day or full day with kids, and the rest of the land-based options in things to do on Fuerteventura.
