Introductory diving in La Lajita: what happens before your first underwater minute

Updated September 12, 2026 · 6 min read

Diver with scuba equipment in the waters off La Lajita

The first surprise in a beginner dive is how much of the session happens before the underwater part. Equipment has to fit, the instructor has to explain what you will do, and you need time to become comfortable with an unfamiliar activity. A two-hour booking is not two hours exploring below the surface.

The La Lajita introductory dive, tour 460719, is listed from €75 per person for two to two and a half hours in our inventory dated 12 September 2026. It has 4.9 stars from 78 reviews and includes equipment and hotel pickup in its short description. The important next step is to establish which option and pickup area those words cover.

The experience is an introduction, not a qualification

This is for someone wanting to try scuba diving under instruction. It is not a shortcut to becoming an independent diver. The distinction matters if you are comparing a short holiday activity with a structured course or hoping to use the booking as proof of training later.

Diving Atlantis in La Lajita describes beginner sessions with a briefing, practice and an instructor-accompanied dive from the shore. The centre also distinguishes introductory options from its more extensive training programmes. Confirm which programme the booking page is selling rather than treating every “first dive” label as interchangeable.

You do not need to arrive knowing how to use the equipment. You do need to arrive willing to listen, practise and tell the instructor when something is unclear. That willingness is a more useful starting point than expecting confidence to appear as soon as you enter the water.

Separate the whole appointment from underwater time

The two to two and a half hours in tour 460719 are the listed activity duration. The inventory does not say that all of that is underwater, and we do not assign it an invented dive time. Ask how long the selected option normally spends in the water and how much time is set aside for instruction.

The dive centre currently advertises introductory variants with 20 or 40 minutes underwater on its own site. A lower advertised price elsewhere may therefore refer to a shorter option, a direct-booking promotion or a different programme. Compare the selected option, not just the first euro amount in a search result.

Keep your next appointment comfortably separate. Fitting equipment, changing and transfer arrangements are less predictable than clicking a two-hour block into a holiday calendar. This is especially relevant if another member of your party plans to wait nearby rather than participate.

What the equipment inclusion actually tells you

Included equipment means you are not expected to bring a complete scuba setup. It does not tell you that every size is available on every departure or that a particular mask will suit you without adjustment. Give the centre any sizing information it requests and raise concerns beforehand.

Ask what you should bring for before and after the session, where belongings can be left and whether changing facilities are available. A swimsuit and towel are useful practical items; the centre should specify everything else. Do not buy specialist equipment just because you are uncertain what “included” covers.

If you wear glasses, explain that before booking and ask what viewing options the centre offers. This is an equipment question that can materially change your experience. Discovering at the water’s edge that you cannot see comfortably is an avoidable disappointment.

The instructor’s language is part of the booking

Choose a session in a language you understand comfortably. The briefing is not decorative commentary: it is where you learn how the session works and how to communicate with the instructor. Being able to order lunch in a language is not necessarily enough to follow unfamiliar technical explanations in it.

Ask how many beginners share an instructor and how practice is organised before the main dive. A high review score does not answer either question. With 78 reviews, the 4.9 rating is encouraging feedback, but it cannot guarantee how much individual attention your particular group will need.

You should also ask what happens if you decide during practice that you do not want to continue. The answer may affect your choice of activity and your budget. We do not promise a refund for stopping voluntarily; the operator’s stated terms determine that.

Age and health: get the applicable answer

We do not assign a universal minimum age from the name “introductory dive”. Operators set different limits and programmes differ; use the individual booking page and have the centre confirm eligibility for your child’s age and the selected session.

Ask the centre which health questionnaire or clearance it requires before arrival. Questions about your fitness to dive belong with a qualified doctor, not this travel guide. Likewise, tell the centre about your flight plans and obtain the applicable guidance rather than fitting a dive immediately before departure on the basis of a general article.

There is no reason to turn a reluctant child’s trial into a test of courage. If the child wants to look at fish but dislikes the idea of scuba equipment, a different activity may achieve the holiday objective with less pressure. Our snorkelling and diving selection shows both formats.

Why La Lajita is a practical choice for the south

The centre is based in La Lajita, and its own site advertises transfers in southern Fuerteventura. “Hotel pickup” therefore needs an address-specific confirmation; it should not be read as a promise to collect you anywhere on the island.

If you are staying in Corralejo, compare the travel involved with a northern option before paying. For someone near Costa Calma or Tarajalejo, La Lajita may fit the day more naturally. Ask when you will leave your accommodation and when you can expect to return, not just when the lesson begins.

The local guided snorkelling offer, tour 450243, is €39 with 50 minutes listed in the same inventory. That is €36 below the introductory dive’s starting price, but it is a different activity rather than a discounted version of scuba. Before reserving either, decide whether you want to experience breathing underwater or simply observe marine life from the surface.
